Rhinoceros

Popular name: Black rhinoceros

Scientific name: Diceros bicornis

Geographical distribution: South Africa, Kenya, Malawi, Namibia, Swaziland, Tanzania and Zimbabwe.

Natural habitat: pastures, savannahs and places with plenty of shrubs.

Eating habits: it is herbivorous. Eat leaves of acacia and herbs. It moves at great distances to get water.

Size: The length varies between 3 meters and 3.80 meters. The height is between 1.40 meters and 1.70 meters.

Weight: From 800 kg to 1350 kg.

Gestation period: From 420 to 570 days.

Number of children: 1

Average life expectancy: About 35 years.

Species conservation status: All rhinoceros species are threatened with extinction because they are very poorly fertile - each female has only one calf every two years - and therefore very vulnerable to hunting, in addition to suffering from the destruction of their habitat. They have been hunted intensively because virtually all of their parts are used in traditional medicine. The most valuable part is the horn, which has been used as an aphrodisiac, to cure fevers, to handle daggers, or to prepare a potion that is supposed to detect poisons.
